Caritas Nyeri mental health programme is working tirelessly to ensure that Josephine Muthoni aged 28 and suffers from a mental health condition finds the long overdue justice.
Josephine has been defiled several times on different days and months by a neighbor aged 48 for about one and a half years and ended up giving birth to a baby boy now aged one.
This case was reported on several occasions by her mother (who at one time found them in the act behind their house) to the police and to the area chief but no action was taken..
The mental health programme coordinator learnt of the case during her visit to Wandumbi mental health support group that Josephine belongs to and she took up the case with an advocate and the matter is now in the Nyeri law court and the culprit arrested and awaiting hearing.
Through the advocate the court ordered for a DNA test to be done on Josephine, her son and the culprit and this was done on 6th July 2015 at the government chemist in Kenyatta hospital.
The court also ordered assessment of her mental health status which has already been done at the Nyeri County referral hospital.
Caritas Nyeri’s determination is to see justice done regarding this case so that it can be a lesson to the public that people with mental illnesses should not be taken advantage of by other people merely on their health status and they too have rights like all of us!
