Caritas Nyeri in partnership with Caritas Germany provided 400 households of shalom Canaan with dam liners, drip kits and 2300lts capacity plastic tanks to store rain water harvested from the roofs of their houses for domestic use and kitchen gardening. The excess water after the tank is filled up is directed to a water panfor kitchen gardening using drip irrigation.

The aim of the project is to restore food security to the residents in the 4 villages.  The residents were internally displaced Kenyans during the 2007-2008 post-election violence.  It is for this reason that CaritasNyeri introduced rain water harvesting technology to improve water availability in this new settlement which can be used to supplement water for domestic use and kitchen gardening.
